Then she enrolled as a rabbinic
student at JTS, graduating in
May last year with a master's
degree in Jewish education and
her rabbinic ordination. She said
she might have stayed in Israel
for rabbinic school if its Conser-
vative schools accepted female
students.
Rabbi Faudem is among the
80 or so women ordained at JTS
since the seminary began or-
daining women rabbis in 1985.
She considers herself lucky
that Hillel hired her last August.
It enabled her to return to her
hometown and do exactly what
she planned.
"I never wanted a pulpit," she
said. "You have the consistent
opportunity (at Hillel) to work
with people, and I love to work
with people."
The only real adjustment
she's had to make is learning to
call many of her old teachers by
their first names.
"Everyone here is looking for
me to succeed — everyone from
the principal to my first- and sec-
ond-grade teachers," Rabbi Fau-
dem said.
If she hadn't returned to the
States, she might also not have
met her husband, Jeffrey Ersh-
ler, a Baltimore native who at-
tended the Columbia-JTS
program. He is pursuing a mas-
ter of business administration
degree at the University of
Michigan.
As a Detroiter and baseball
nut, Rabbi Faudem is a the-hard
Tiger's fan. Jeffrey, on the oth-
er hand, is loyal to the Orioles.
Other than a bit of seasonal ri-
valry, their Ann Arbor home is
harmonious.
Rabbi Faudem's week consists
of teaching Talmud, Mishnah,
life-cycle events and Jewish
holidays to seventh- and eighth-
grade classes. She also co-teach-
es the Bet Midrash program,
with four other area rabbis, in
which eighth-grade students
study kashrut, Pesach, prayer
and other subjects with individ-
ual rabbis, and is involved in
teacher education and year-long
projects with the lower grades.
The only responsibilities she
doesn't have are sermonizing
and performing life-cycle events.
"The kids love her," said Eng-
lish teacher Sharon Schwartz.
"She's very approachable. Be-
cause of her camp background,
she's in touch with the kinds of
concerns kids have." Rabbi Fau-
dem is a veteran of Tamarack,
spending her last years as a ju-
nior counselor at Ortonville.
Her favorite part of her new
job?
Walking into the building
every morning to the bustle of
students, some of whom barely
reach her knees, she said.
"You walk down the halls and
you see the future of our people.
What could be more excit-
ing?" 0
