MOTOR COACH TOURS - AIR AND CRUISE TRAVEL

SHAPE: UP FOR SUMMER!

With summer on the way, we're thinking more
about what shape we're in rather than how well
our central air conditioning will perform.

BUT YOUR AIR CONDITIONING
NEEDS TO BE IN SHAPE TOO!

sures on display in the Mickve Is-
rael museum.
Among them is the birthxecord
of Philip Minis, the first white
child actually conceived and born
in Georgia. Descendants of Minis
and other early congregants are
still Mickve Israel members.
Among them, as well, in an earli-
er generation was Raphael Moses,
who planted peach orchards, de-
veloped a technology for shipping
the fruit to far-off markets and is
known —in the Peach State — as
the father of the peach industry.
Moses was a descendant of Dr.
Samuel Nunes Ribiero, one of the
original 42 and the individual
credited with getting Oglethorpe's
approval for their coming ashore.
Oglethorpe's own group had,
earlier, been struck with yellow
fever which had already taken the
lives of 20 settlers. Before fleeing
to England, Dr. Ribiero had been
the physician attending the Grand
Inquisitor in Lisbon; he was an ex-
pert in infectious diseases and, ac-
cording to some reports, he had
made a bargain with Oglethorpe:
"Let us land and I'll treat the yel-
low fever."
Whatever the truth of this ac-
count of the landing, the Jews did
come ashore, and they became an
integral part of the tiny Savannah
community. The diary of Benjamin
Sheftall, one of the founding fa-
thers, is among the cherished ar-
tifacts in the Mickve Israel
museum. It records the Sabbath
services held in his home and oth-
er events. Benjamin's son, Morde-
cai, would become the highest
ranking Jewish officer of the Amer-
ican Revolutionary forces; and
Benjamin and his own son, Shef-
tall Sheftall, would be captured
and imprisoned by the British.
In the next century, Mickve Is-
rael members would include
Mordecai Manuel Noah, sheriff of
New York, founder of Tammany
Hall and an early Zionist — in
1825, he sought to establish a Jew-
ish homeland called Ararat at
Grand Island on the Niagara. Riv-
er. Another congregant was Com-
modore Uriah Phillips, who
rescued Monticello, the home of
Jefferson, from destruction and
who was responsible for the abo-
lition of flogging in the U.S. Navy.
During the Civil War, Mickve
Israel congregants remained loy-
al supporters of the Confederacy.
Major Samuel Yates Levy was the
highest ranking Jewish officer in
the Confederate Army.
In our own time, Rabbi Belzer
says, congregants are 'lust as loy-
al to their home town, although
its values have taken a 180-degree
turn." Members like Lee Adler
have campaigned successfully to
fund low-cost housing in the city
— for minority citizens (blacks
constitute half Savannah's popu-
lation). The rabbi cites Oglethor-
pe's telling description of that first
shipload of settlers: People "of de-
cayed circumstances." The phrase
has not lost its relevance. CI
