I 11//////////MUMM1 JET An Off-Broadway, Professional Theatre in West Bloomfield "Dell asked me to be part of a panel discussing a new book, The Cinderella Complex, and that was the turning point in my ca- reer (from newspaper to broad- casting). She believed in me, and I continue to ask for her opinions. "I remember interviewing Gordie Howe and hearing how Wayne Gretzky called him from time to time to ask advice and how that made Gordie Howe feel each time Gretzky scored a goal; it was like Gordie helping Gret- zky score each of those goals. I think it's the same way for Dell and the younger women she has helped." Age has never been a barrier to Warner. If her facelift sub- tracted years from her appear- ance, it added to the insight of people reading her Detroit News articles describing the procedure. Lori Grundy and Jacob Gra- ham were Warner's students at John Robert Powers, learning television techniques from act- ing to announcing commercials. Besides appreciating the infor- mation and straightforward ap- praisals Warner brought to the classroom, both said they are grateful for the confidence she helped accentuate and the audi- tions she scouted. Deborah Laurie was a TV in- tern for Warner, who helped Laurie find full-time work in- cluding a position at CNN. Mau- reen Feder shared a public-relations project with Warner and later a friendship, which has included professional coaching. Barbara Koster, a field pro- ducer at "Good Morning Ameri- ca," worked with Warner on "Good Afternoon Detroit." "Dell was always somebody to bounce ideas off," said Koster, who regularly keeps in touch with her faithful friend. "I'm Catholic, but she's my Jewish mother. She was there to help me plan my wedding, and she's a constant and steady support system." Because Warner took some gi- ant steps at a time when there were few women in broadcast- ing, she had to become her own personal support system. With- out college training, she learned firsthand the importance of pub- lic relations and was recruited for television by a WXYZ pro- ducer, Sandy McClure, who was impressed by the firm way Warner helped fight drug abuse. Now, years and years later, as a television broadcaster, Warn- er continues to fight issues that will make a difference. "I don't recognize the fact that I'm 71," said the grandmother of four. "As far as I'm concerned, I've got a big career ahead of me." LI presents GREAT DINING OVERLOOKING BEAUTIFUL LAKE ST.
