Lunchtime: More tuna fish, one
cup of tomatoes, coffee and water.
Evening: I take my second pre-
exercise pill of the day. I ride a sta-
tionary bike for 30 minutes. I take
a pre-meal pill and sit down to
dinner.
Blast this one-cup limit! I in-
dulge with a plateful of lettuce,
celery, carrots, tomatoes and cu-
cumbers. Hold the dressing. For-
get the tuna fish. The thought of
StarKist makes me want to puke.

Day Two

Morning: I awaken, nauseous.
I skip breakfast.
Mid-morning: Echh! Don't
make me eat. Please, please don't
make me eat.
Lunchtime: Skip it. I want
bread. HI can't have bread, I don't
want anything.
Mid-afternoon: I feel weak. I'm
half-hungry, half-dead. Hmm, I
notice that someone in the office
has brought in bagels. Hmm. I de-
vour six.

Post Mortem

In truth, I started and stopped
this diet a half-dozen times. At
some point between the months
of February and May, it became
oh-so-appallingly clear that I was
born to fail at QuickTrim.
Or ... was QuickTrim failing
me? For advice, I called Emily
Holzman, a clinical dietitian at
Oakwood Hospital and Medical
Center in Dearborn.
Ms. Holzman is quite familiar
with these high-protein diets. In
fact, she has spoken to people who
swear by them. But for many,
many people (like me), they just
don't work.
"They're not palatable," Ms.
Holzman says. `That's the bottom
line with these diets. People don't
want to adhere to these types of
regimens over a long period of
time."
I might add: What's the use of
a diet that's not durable? Yo-yoing
from skinny to fat is known to be
insane. And yet, fast-fixes like
QuickTrim seem to encourage the
unhealthy pattern.
"I think that exercise would be
very difficult on this diet," Ms.
Holzman says. "In the initial 10
minutes you spend working out,
you burn energy that's made from
carbohydrates (breads, grains,
pasta, legumes).
When you increase the inten-
sity of your exercise, your body
needs carbohydrates. They're a
source of stored energy."
Ah. So maybe that's why
QuickTrim made me feel so weak
and miserable. Prior to speaking
with Ms. Holzman, I attributed
my condition to the regimen's pre-
scription of pills. I had a hunch
they were vitamin/caffeine sup-
plements, underscore the caffeine.
Listen, I could go on and on ...
but I don't want to bore you with
the details. Gist is, I didn't lose
weight. And, I couldn't wait to
break this diet. ❑
