Call The Jewish News 354-5959 not happy. And very hungry. And very weak. For the next 12 days, I was fas- tidious in following the diet. I charted every morsel (what little there was), which consisted of two proteins, two vegetables, three fruits (by 6 p.m.), three starches, 4 ounces of skim milk, 112 tsp. Morton's Lite Salt, two MWL nu- trients a day ($3-$7/day for nutri- ents) and one MWL vitamin ($10/bottle for 30 tablets). I was ravenous. I felt com- pletely deprived and lost all en- thusiasm for eating. Three fruits by 6 p.m.? Can't I just substitute one little pack of peanut M&Ms instead? And during those 12 days, I fluctuated up and down be- tween 115 and 116 1/2 pounds. For this much suffering, shouldn't I be losing any more weight? I'm starving ... took a road trip to University of Michigan Medical Center Preventive Cardiology Services at MedSport in Ann Arbor. I met with Kathy Rhodes, Ph.D., a registered dietitian. Prior to our visit, I faxed Ms. Rhodes my daily intake to be com- puter analyzed at MedSport. The (undercover) MWL diet I was fol- lowing was based on 1,100-1,200 calories per day, which broke down to: 40 percent protein, 28 percent carbohydrates, and 33 percent fat. Ms. Rhodes advised that most active women, if they have to mon- itor their calories, should not go lower than 1,500 calories per day I (1,800 for men). She recommends a "diet" consisting of 20 percent protein, 55-60 percent carbohy- drates, 20-25 percent fat. She analyzed Day 12 of my diet: 573 calories! "The (Medical Weight Loss Diet) is low in carbohydrates, which forces your body to use pro- tein and fat stores (ketosis). It's tricking your body to act the way it's not supposed to, causing you to lose fluid and, therefore, into quick weight loss. " "They're not teaching you to work with regular foods from the grocery stores and restaurants ... It's not so much the weight, it's the body composition — how much body fat you have. I believe in ad- equate protein, more carbohy- drates and low fat," added Ms. Rhodes. I do too. So, 16 days later, weight at 114 1/2 (for one day only), I quit. Back to the land of the eating. Jim Lipson of West Bloomfield, on the other hand, is a diehard Medical Weight Losser. At the time of this interview, Lipson had lost 87 pounds. "Knowing that I have to weigh in three times a week has forced me not to cheat. "I'm proud that I haven't gained any weight ... I just mentally made up my mind that I'm not going down that road again-, I'm too old," says the 48-year-old. So am I. P.S.: I've gained back all but one pound ... ❑ A Slow Death To QuickTrim! Some advice: Lose the flab some other way. RUTH LITTMANN STAFF WRITER C all me complacent, but I re- ally don't care about losing weight. Five pounds. OK. I guess that couldn't hurt. But fad diets? No thanks. The idea of self-deprivation is about as tan- talizing as tuna fish with green peppers — for breakfast. I'm 129 pounds, 5-feet-5 1/2- inches tall. Not skinny, not fat. But I'm happy, and that's atypi- cal in this universe of wish-I-were- thinner women in their 20s. Alas, my reporter's instinct has gotten the better of me, as has Cy- bergenics QuickTrim. I've decid- ed to see if the much-trumpeted plan really works. Can I, an av- erage-weight, reasonably active individual look "camera perfect" in just 14 days? Weight — and see. QuickTrim bans sweets, dairy products, fruits and bread. Even rice cakes are off-limits. Plain, no- fat yogurt? Ha. Don't even think about it! This plan requires me to measure my celery. No more than a cup of veggies per meal. Gi re me a break. Ali, the break QuickTrim-style. On four of the diet's 14 days, I may consume a plain baked potato or small portions of oatmeal. Less lib- ertine menus entail the torture I've yet to describe. Read on, if you're brave. But please, please, please digest one bit of advice: Lose the flab some other way. This QuickTrim busi- ness is tough to stomach. Day One Morning: I awaken, take a QuickTrim pre-exercise pill, work out for 30 minutes, take a Quick- Trim pre-meal pill, sit down to a breakfast that consists of three ounces of tuna fish in water, one cup of diced green pepper and black coffee. Mid-morning: Mmm. I con- sume three more ounces of tuna fish and a cup of water.
