piece of peanut brittle, really tiny.
Pre-movie snack: medium rasp-
berry-lime soda
Post-movie dinner: a pear
Ethnic restaurants are actual-
ly a good choice for dieters because
they usually offer lower fat and
vegetarian meals. The Mexican
restaurant earlier this week was
good, as was the Japanese restau-
rant. But I should have moved the
fried and meat items to the side.

Thursday

Breakfast: one soft-boiled egg,
a quarter of a grapefruit, one piece
of Health Nut toast, coffee
Lunch: half a tuna sandwich,
five or six pretzels, glass of water
Mid-afternoon snack: piece of
mandel bread.
Dinner: Lean Cuisine: chick-
en piccata, apple, bottle of beer
All in all, not a bad day's diet.
But Lean Cuisine meals are
loaded with sodium, Ms. Price
pointed out. Health Valley is a
brand she recommends.

Friday

Breakfast: boiled egg, two pieces
of Health Nut toast, quarter
grapefruit, coffee
Mid-morning: banana muffin
Lunch: baked falafel sandwich,
small diet Coke, two Trefoil cook-
ies
Dinner: popcorn and two bot-
tles of beer
If the banana-nut muffin was
low-fat, fine. The falafel was OK,
too. I could have skipped the cook-
ies, although since it was only two
the entire day, I didn't need to in-
dulge in self-derision. Ms. Price
suggested I pack dinner the night
before if I face time constraints in
the future. Popcorn isn't terrible
if it's air popped; this wasn't. And
beer not only lacks nutrition but
slows metabolism, Ms. Price said.
I didn't lose weight on this
makeshift diet, but I didn't gain
any, either. Then again, maybe I
did. I don't have a scale to tell me
the truth. ❑

Weighting For Godot

For this much suffering, shouldn't I be losing any
more weight? I'm starving.

iet? Not a pretty thought.
Especially since I have zero

willpower. I wasn't about
to go the pill route, so I
joined — undercover, of course —
the Medical Weight Loss pro-
gram.
Unlike most diets, MWL is
premised on the idea that a reg-
imen of high-protein, low-carbo-
hydrate foods, supplemented by
two MWL nutrient packets a day,
will effect weight loss in a quick
and healthful way.
To be in optimum form for the
diet, you have to undergo the
Cleansing Phase — three days in

absolute hell — and live to tell
about it.
"The purpose (of the Cleansing
Phase) is to put your body in the
proper chemical balance, so when
you begin your nutritional pro-
gram, you will lose weight in a
very safe, fast and enjoyable way.
The metabolic principle behind
this phase is to totally eliminate
starches, sugars and carbohy-
drates. Then your body will go di-
rectly to your stored fat and use
it for fuel energy," says the pro-
motional literature from MWL.
Let me tell you, there was
nothing enjoyable about cleans-

ing.
For three interminable days,
my diet consisted of:
Breakfast - 112 orange
Optional - 1 or 2 eggs, 1/4 or
1/2 cup Eggbeaters or 3-6 egg
whites
Lunch - red meat and salad
Afternoon - 1/2 orange
Dinner - red meat and salad
Plus, 1/4-1/2 tsp. Morton's Lite
Salt daily
I could eat as much red meat
and green, raw vegetables as I
wanted. 'The more of these foods
that you eat, the more effective
the cleansing phase will be," says
the literature.
And, I had to drink 48 to 64
ounces of water a day.
The morning after Cleansing
Phase completion, I was down 4
pounds (I gained 1/2 pound back
because I had slices of "deli"
turkey at Cook's Garden (a no-no
on the requirement sheet). I was
