0, 6 5 New Deals In Defense Area Jerusalem (JPFS) — McDonnell Douglas has signed $400 million in deals with Israeli defense con- tractors, more than half of its offset agreement for the IDF's purchase of the F-15I, a senior company executive said. Robert Trice Jr., McDonnell's vice president of business de- velopment, told the Israel Man- agement Center that his company is looking for long-term partnerships with contractors in Israel rather than simply pur- chasing products from them as part of the offset agreement. "There are very few countries that McDonnell Douglas sees as important strategically to its fu- ture," Mr. Trice said. "One of them is Israel." Mr. Trice said a dozen Israeli companies are already direct suppliers to McDonnell. They include Israel Aircraft Indus- tries' Lahav division, which is a partner in a bid to upgrade 435 T-38 trainer jets. Elbit and Rafael are working with the U.S. defense contrac- tor to develop and supply the Dash Helmet and Python mis- sile to McDonnell's F-18A. Israel is also one of 11 nations involved in a McDonnell project to develop the MD900 Explorer, a new airplane. In the civilian sector, an Is- raeli consortium is working with McDonnell to develop solar en- ergy in a project to begin this year. In another project, Madah- Com, a small Israeli firm, is working with McDonnell to adapt military communications to develop a commercial public address system. Sales Growth Is Steady Jerusalem (JPFS) — The pace of growth in retail sales in Israel remained steady in the first quarter, rising 0.9 percent com- pared to the same period last year, the Central Bureau of Sta- tistics reported.
