Coalition politics can be a mine-
field, a fact that was much in ev-
idence in recent days as a
number of Jewish groups looked
for ways to participate in the up-
coming "Stand for the Family,"
a giant gathering of progressive
pro-family groups in the shad-
ow of the Lincoln Memorial, de-
spite the fact that the June 1
rally is scheduled for a Satur-
day.
The event, a "national day of
renewal, celebration and com-
mitment to children," is the
brainchild of Children's Defense
`/= Fund founder Marion Wright
Edelman. Planning for the
event, which promoters hope
will attract more than a half-
million people, was accelerated
to make sure it preceded Nation
of Islam leader Louis Far-
rakhan's family march, sched-
uled for the fall.

The Saturday date was the
• only one available, CDF officials
said.
That put the long list of Jew-
ish groups that support the
goals of the march — and which
have worked closely with Ms.
Edelman over the years — in a
ticklish position.
The National Jewish Com-
munity Relations Advisory
Council (NJCRAC), while sup-
porting the goals of the event,
"cannot participate officially or
encourage member agencies to
participate," said Karen Senter,
the group's co-director for do-
mestic concerns. "But we strong-
ly endorse the principles behind

the 'stand,' and we understand
the difficulties of choosing the
proper day. There are efforts un-
derway to make it possible for
some Jews to participate with-
in the limits of their religious
commitment. We are dissemi-
nating that information."
Those efforts include reserv-
ing close-in hotel rooms for Sab-
bath-observing participants,
providing kosher meals and set-
ting upconvenient Shabbat ser-
vices.
The National Council of Jew-
ish Women has scheduled a pro-
family lobby day for Friday.
"The Stand for the Family is
a nonpolitical event," said
Sammie Moshenberg, NCJW's
Washington director. "We want-
ed to add a component that
would involve more direct ad-
vocacy on the issues that affect
families, and at the same time
would give some of the people
`-\ who are uncomfortable attend-
ing the Saturday event a chance
to be a part of something very
important."
