A Nutty Diet

A wimpy reporter tried to diet, but found herself
lacking the willpower to stay away from peanut
brittle.

alyzed. She said that overall, it
was low in fat but lacked nutri-
tional value. I should have eaten
more fruits and vegetables and
gone a little easier on the peanut
brittle, she said. Did you know
peanut brittle is not one of the four
food groups?

admit I'm weak when it comes
to gastronomic pleasures, but
Pm smarter than my colleagues
who spent a week or two whin-
ing about the insanely small por-
tions of pseudo-food they were
allowed on their diets.
That's not exactly what regis-
tered dietitian and exercise phys-
iologist Beverly Price said, but
something like it.
Ms. Price, a practitioner for 12
years, runs the Living Better Sen-
sibly center in Southfield with
partner Nanette Cameron. They
take an "undieting" approach to

health, tossing out antiquated no-
tions about calories, "exchanges,"
and the "proper" weight.
Good thing, because I don't own
a scale. But I wanted to lose 2 or
3 pounds in time for my sister's
wedding, a goal that may seem
laughable to many people but is
not easy for a petite person to
reach.
I couldn't stomach a quick-
fix diet because that would mean
I'd be thinking only about food for
a week (and Pm weak, as I said).
So I devised my own, week-long
diet, which Ms. Price kindly an-

Breakfast: one piece of Health
Nut toast, coffee with skim milk,
glass of water
Mid-morning: coffee, 3/4 carton
of fat-free peach yogurt
Late mid-morning: tuna fish
sandwich. Tuna made with a ta-
blespoon of lite Miracle Whip, plus
one tea biscuit, glass of water
Lunch: small bean burrito (no
cheese) and about two ounces of
Spanish-style rice, iced tea
Mid-afternoon snack: four dried
apricots, a half-ounce of peanut
brittle and about two tea biscuits.
Evening: medium Coke
Night: bowl of Rice Chex with
skim milk and banana

Ms. Price: One piece of toast in
the morning is rather "skimpy."
Had I eaten two pieces, with nat-
urally-sweetened preserves, I
probably wouldn't have been him-
gry for the peanut brittle. The
mid-morning peach yogurt was a
good choice, but avoid buying the
artificially sweetened kind, she
said.
Caffeinated coffee is not a good
idea, any time, Ms. Price said. It
robs the body of nutrients and
leaves a body feeling famished.

skim milk, no whipped cream
Post-cinema dinner: small
Greek salad
If only I could have stopped at
a small piece of peanut brittle or
eaten a piece of fruit instead, I
would have been better off, Ms.
Price said. The rest of the day's
meals were fine (although I should
have eaten a bigger breakfast and
drank decaf or herbal tea, she ad-
vised). The feta on a small Greek
salad has as much fat as a steak,
she told me, much to my chagrin.
