What Allen is really after,
though, is the chance to perform
the piece as it's currently written:
as a full-length ballet with ac-
companiment by a chorus, cham-
ber ensemble, dance troupe and
jazz trio. Financing such a pro-
duction, however, has proven dif-
ficult.
In the meantime, Allen has
found a challenge exploring the
bounds of improvisation while, he
says, "bringing sacred texts to
life."

"Pilgrimages" is being
performed as part of Spring
Dances '96 at the Performance
Network in Ann Arbor. A

up of works each evening.
Shows are 8 p.m. Friday-Sat-
urday, April 26-27, and 7 p.m.
Sunday, April 28. Allen and
Stanger-Read perform in the
Sunday show only. Tickets are
$12. Call (313) 663-0681.
