The company also stresses the economic and personal inde- pendence of working women, and founder Veronica Devine has been involved in advancing women's rights in South Africa for years. The company exports to 30 countries. Justine doesn't advertise, re- lying on word-of-mouth to re- cruit both staff and new clients. "If your friend is happy, she'll tell you," Ms. Proos explains. The company in Israel has also be- gun to market its wares through cosmeticians, who find out about Justine at professional exhibi- tions or by client request. Mati Haus became a convert to Avroy Shlein products after using that company's CRT con- centrate. "It changed my skin," she says. "I was so impressed, I traveled to South Africa to learn. more." Ms. Haus is now managing di- rector of Avroy Shlein in Israel. Her company has been active in the Israeli market for seven years and boasts "over 1,000 Beauty Advisers (BAs)." Avroy Shlein was established 23 years ago and is South Africa's biggest direct-sales cos- metics company. The company, part of the Sara Lee corporation, has over 200 products including 15 skin-care series, makeup, hair care and perfumes, a men's line and vitamins. All products sold in Israel are imported from South Africa. BAs take training courses and pass tests in order to qualify as Avroy Shlein representatives. They are then free to register as independent businesspeople sell- ing Avroy Shlein cosmetics. The basic method is selling to groups of no more than five persons. Like Ms. Proos, Ms. Haus does not advertise, preferring to rely on word of mouth. ❑ Joint Venture In Communications Jerusalem (JPFS) — Geotek Communications, Cogeco Cable and Techcom have signed a let- ter of intent to form a joint ven- ture to launch a Canadian mobile wireless communications service based on Geotek's pro- prietary FNMA technology. The new company, called GeoNet Canada, will be 45 per- cent owned by Geotek. The three partners said the letter of intent is subject to the completion of a due diligence re- port, approval of the board of di- rectors and the execution of definitive agreements. GeoNet will focus on provid- ing advanced mobile communi- cations services to business or- ganizations that rely on real- time communications to manage and coordinate fleets of vehicles and to maximize the productiv- ity of mobile workers. The service will be provided using Geotek's FHMA-based digital network technology, which provides spectrum effi- ciency, voice and data services, immunity to interference and extensive coverage. The com- munications services are already in operation in three major American cities, and are sched- uled to operate in over 35 major U.S. markets by the end of 1997. The companies also an- nounced that Industry Canada, the Canadian agency responsi- ble for spectrum allocation, has approval in principle to give GeoNet 900 MHZ frequency al- location. This will allow the company to deploy a digital radio network which will be completely com- patible with Geotek's FHMA network in the United States, al- lowing customers of one system to roam on the other. Israeli Payment Morality Is Rising Jerusalem (JPFS) — Israeli debtors' payment morality was rising compared with that of Eu- ropeans, according to data re- cently presented at a conference organized for the Federation of European Credit Management Associations, a professional con- ference in Belgium. According to the data, Israelis' payment morality remained sta- ble in the first three months of the year, compared with the cor- responding period in 1995, with an average delay in payment of 37 days. Most European countries' payment morality was on the decline, as measured by the av- erage number of days payments are delayed. Even so, Israelis continued to show one of the lowest payment morality rankings compared with other countries. Eyal Yanai, general manager of Business Data Israel and founder of the Israel Institute for Credit Management, said Germany and England have suf- fered the worst decline in pay- ment morality. In Germany, the average de- lay in payment has increased to 29 days from 20, while in Eng- land the delay has risen to 32 from 26. Holland has the best payment morality, with an average delay in payment of 19 days, followed by Belgium, where the average delay is 20 days. Italy had the worse payment morality, with an average delay in payment of 41 days, followed by Israel. 5.25' 535' INTEREST RATE A.P.Y./* 60 MONTH CERTIFICATE 5.75' 5.8 7.
