Agreements Made
On Free Trade

Jerusalem (JPFS) — Industry.
and Trade Minister Micha Har-
ish will sign free-trade agree-
ments with the Czech Republic
and Slovakia in May, the min-
istry said.
The two agreements, which
will go into effect on Jan. 1, 1997,
represent Israel's first free-trade
agreement with any Central Eu-
ropean country.
According to the agreement,
there will be an immediate ex-
emption of certain taxes on some
of the goods Israel imports from
the two countries.
When the agreement goes into
effect, additional steps will be
implemented to reduce customs
taxes until their elimination in
January 2000.
The agreement prevents Is-
rael from increasing the customs
tax on any food or alcohol ex-
ported to the Czech Republic or
Slovakia.
Two-way trade between Israel
and the Czech Republic and Slo-
vakia totals $100 million, but of-
ficials say potential for trade to
develop exists.
Last year, Israel's exports
there increased 25 percent to $40
million.
Israel is negotiating similar
agreements with Poland and
Slovenia.
