Thus the rationale for Israel to
be holy because God is holy and to
have a close relationship to God
because the people must emulate
God.
The Midrash pointed out that
this is comparable to the court of
a king, where the court must im-
itate the king. In theological lan-
guage, this doctrine is know as
Imatatio Dei — the imitation of
God.
The concept of holiness, of be-
ing different from the profane, sug-
gests as the tradition points out,
"you shall be holy," means "you
shall be distinct." The people of Is-
rael are to become distinct from
other people pursuing a way of life
different from that practiced by
other people. The statement that
God is holy means in effect that
He acts in holy ways: He is just
and righteous.
The way to holiness was for Is-
raelites individually and collec-
tively to emulate God's attributes
through the imitation of God. The
emphasis on human relations in-
cludes respect for parents, concern
for the poor and the stranger,
prompt payment of wages, justice
in all dealings Thus does this se-
drah exemplify the heightened
ethical concern characteristic of
ancient Judaism. ❑
