same organization were strewn
around various neighborhoods
in their towns over the weekend.
No formal complaints were
made, but offended residents
brought in the found material,
they said.
An agent of the U.S. Immi-
gration and Naturalization Ser-
vice found literature from EAEA
in a neighborhood of Westland
Saturday evening and faxed it to
Huntington Woods police. West-
land police said they were un-
aware of the fliers.
Police said without seeing the
group actually littering, they
can't do much.
The reputed leader of Euro-
pean American Educational As-
sociation reportedly works in
nearby Garden City. He could
not be reached for comment.
The Southfield-based Anti-
Defamation League received sev-
eral calls from residents as well
as police chiefs about the litera-
ture, said director Richard
Lobenthal.
And he is familiar with the
EAEA, a neo-Nazi hate group
that's been around for five or six
years.
Generally, Mr. Lobenthal said,
the leafleting starts when the
weather breaks and usually in-
volves a few people dumping
fliers from a car.
"It doesn't take but two peo-
ple. They've been doing this style
of hate for years," he said. But
a few years ago, their activities
were limited to recording racist
jokes on an answering machine.
Today, the group has become
more aggressive as a "full-fledged
neo-Nazi organization."
Still, Mr. Lobenthal considers
EAEA unimportant because it
has few members and very little
money.
He believes EAEA is led by a
man who has been "under-
ground" for a while following a
news report that exposed his ac-
tivities.
`This guy's steeped in the hate
movement. He's a committed big-
ot. Now that he's in his 40s, he's
dealing with young people; he's
a big shot. Basically, he's a non-
entity, but in the hate movement
he gets an identity, he gets to be
a hero," Mr. Lobenthal said.
An answering machine at
EAEA announces that April is
"white pride month" and rails
against immigrants, blacks, ho-
mosexuals, Arabs and Jews. It
offers phone numbers of several

hate groups, including Church
of the Creator and Michigan
Hammer Skins, and bumper
stickers with slogans like "Infla-
tion is Jewish," "Arabs Go Home"

and 'Who Needs Negroids?"
According to the Michigan
State Police, in 1994, 60 police
agencies in the state reported 22
anti-Semitic incidents and 131
bias-motivated crimes against
blacks. More recent data are not
available.
