Prokopow, an "indefatigable" lo-
cal volunteer, are WAND's 1996
"Women Leading The Way" hon-
orees.
Anne Broderick Zill, founder
of the Women's Campaign Fund,
a bi-partisan political action com-
mittee that raises funds for
women candidates, is the
keynote speaker. She'll talk on
"Women's Values — The New
Compass for the 1996 Election
and Beyond." Music will be pro-
vided by Bernard Katz and
Sarah Z. Zwickl.
Ms. Zill, of Washington, D.C.,
said 1996 is a critical year for
women, not because more
women are running for national
office, but because women can,
by voting, turn the tide on poli-
cies and proposals that hurt
them and their children. Women
tend to vote on issues rather
than candidates, Ms. Zill says.
"There's an opportunity for
women to protect gains, the most
important being the way we re-
late to the rest of the world and
whether we value education,
what kind of health care we
want, what kind of research on
women's diseases there will be.
From a budgetary point of view,
which WAND is doing, a long-
term plan for jobs that will ben-
efit women, men and children is
not in place. "Women vote more
often on issues, so the more we
talk on issues, the better the
chance we have for women to see
their opportunity for leadership,"
she says.
Ms. Victor notes that a new
momentum is rippling through
the female electorate as a ma-
jority Republican Congress
hacks away at basic social pro-
grams, gun laws and laws pro-
tecting the environment. Two
years ago, 54 million women
stayed away from the polls, but
this year, WAND believes, they
will vote, in droves.
"Women, generally speaking,
are interested in the long run in
the kind of society and environ-
ment their children will inherit.
When you start seeing money
shifted from nuclear facilities to
creating nuclear bombs, women
get very concerned," she says.
Ms. Zill said polling data show
a much wider gender gap exists
today, with a 20-point difference
between the female preference
for Mr. Clinton and the male
preference for Mr. Dole.
Ms. Victor, of Bloomfield
Township, is serving the end of
a three-year term as national
president of the 26-year-old or-
ganization. She and Lorraine
Lerner of Southfield founded the
Michigan chapter of WAND in
1986. Today, there are roughly
s 300 local members and 10,000
nationwide. WAND maintains
two national offices and two lob-
byists in Washington and a po-
litical action committee that
gives money to candidates.
