Maraton is the last large Keys
community before Key West and
functioned in 1906 as a base
camp for the railroad. It offers
Bahia Honda State Park with
coral reefs and fishing. Swim-
ming in the area is not advised:
Hammerhead sharks, sea
urchins and poison coral can
harm unsuspecting bathers.
Key West is at the southern-
most tip of the Keys and has
been the home of Ernest Hem-
ingway and Tennesee Williams.
The Hemingway home is a ma-
jor tourist site on the island.
There is condo construction
now gong on in Key West, a pro-
liferation of boutiques on the
city's main streets and the ap-
pearance of major hotel chains
all over the island.
A one-hour boat cruise leaves
Key West's public port every day
one hour before sunset. The
cruise ferries passengers out to
the middle of the bay and then
drops anchor. For 20 minutes,
earth, sky and water seem to
meld, providing, with the setting
sun, one of the most relaxing
moments of a lifetime. ❑

An excellent, newly revised
book, A Travel Guide to Jewish
Europe, has new chapters on the
Czech Republic, Poland, Hun-
gary and Slovakia. The 600-page
paperback book guides readers
to the historic sites that survived
the Nazis and World War II, as
well as lists kosher restaurants
and Jewish neighborhoods. The
book is by Ben Frank, published
by Pelican and costs $18.95.
Philadelphia has a special ho-
tel package for the Jewish trav-
eler. With one phone call, you
can arrange a trip to the Na-
tional Museum of American
Jewish History, explore artifacts
from the Bible lands at the Uni-
versity of Pennsylvania Muse-
um and book a hotel room. The
package, which includes free
parking and a free breakfast, is
available from Aug. 1 through
Dec. 31. In town, you can visit
the oldest Ashkenazic congre-
gation in the Western Hemi-
sphere, the second oldest
Sephardic shul and the only syn-
agogue designed by Frank Lloyd
