ilm buffs and purists unite.
Starting tonight, you're in
for a visual extravaganza
that will take you through
Monday evening. The National
Film Registry Tour makes its
eighth stop at the Detroit Film
Theatre where it will present 12
fully restored films. On Tuesday,
the tour will head out to the next
stop on its cross-country trek.
The tour, which originated in
Madison, Wis., in October 1995,
was created to raise awareness
of the importance of film preser-
vation for American movies. '
Since 1989, 175 culturally, his-
torically or aesthetically signifi-
cant motion pictures have been
entered into the National Film
Registry — 25 per year.
The tour is funded by the Li-
brary of Congress' private sector
advisory group, the James Madi-
son Council; the Film Founda-
tion, a group of leading film
directors committed to film
preservation; Turner Classic
Movies; Comcast Cablevision;
and individual contributions.
A Madison Council member,
actor James Earl Jones has made
selected appearances throughout
the tour and will be the keynote
speaker at the opening reception
tonight, Friday, April 19, at 6
p.m. at the Detroit Film Theatre.
Hosted by the Cinematic Arts
Council, the reception is $20/CAC
members and $30/general pub-
lic, which includes admission to
the first film, 2001: A Space
Odyssey (Stanley Kubrick, 1968)
at 8 p.m. Call in advance for the
reception at
(313) 833-2323. At press time,
tickets are still available for all
movies.
