Israelis Earn Places
On Top Of The World
BOAZ DVIR SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS
R
etired plummer Yisrael
Gerber is one of a handful
of Israelis who have land-
ed a spot in the Guiness
Book Of World Records, accord-
ing to Maariv.
Mr. Gerber earned his place
on top of the world by collecting
5,000 monetary notes from 300
countries, Maariv reports.
Although he is confident about
keeping his place in the next Gui-
ness edition — he notes that had
no problem beating out the pre-
vious record-holder, a Brit who
had notes from only 184 coun-
tries — Mr. Gerber relentlessly
continues his march toward un-
challenged currency supremacy,
Maariv reports.
"I am going to compete against
myself," he told Maariv.
It may seem ironic that Israel
— which does not exactly have
the world's most well-regarded
currency — dominates this Gui-
ness category. But Mr. Gerber ex-
plained that it takes more than
just hard work and money to ac-
cumulate such diverse capital. It
takes what he calls a "unique
brain."
"If I did not have the brains to
correspond with [dealers] over-
seas," he told Maariv, "I would
be a nobody."
Who Needs REM?
discovered the man's unique
sleep disposition, he was
shocked, he told Maariv. "I tried
to explain to him the importance
of the finding: It's like a cardiol-
ogist listening to the heart of the
patient and reaching the conclu-
sion that he doesn't have a
heart."
Yet the only effect the lack of
REM sleep has on the man is
that it prevents him from dream-
ing. "And yet," Ranan Shaked
wrote in Maariv, "this dreamless
man accomplished the dreams of
many people and made it into the
Guiness Books of World Record."
The Crowded Skies
El Al managed to crowd more
people into an plane than any
other airline. Guiness notes that
during the 1988 Operation
Solomon, which airlifted Ethiopi-
an Jews to Israel, the national
airline put 1,087 passengers in
a Boeing 747, which usually car-
ries up to 450 passengers,
Maariv reports.
The plane became even more
crowded during the 3-and-half-
hour flight, when an Ethiopian
woman gave birth, Maariv re-
ports.
