The idea of raising $2 million
seemed unattainable at first to
Jewish Family Service Executive
Director Alan Goodman.
"But there was too much at
stake not to raise the money."
Three years ago, the JFS Win-
dows family-violence prevention
program was accepted into the
Van Dusen Endowment Chal-
lenge, developed by the Kresge
Foundation and the Community
Foundation for Southeastern
Michigan. By participating in the
challenge, JFS had to agree to
raise $2 million on its own.
The Van Dusen grant provid-
ed JFS with operating costs of
$100,000 a year for three years.
Raising the $2 million qualified
JFS to receive an additional
$667,000 in endowment funding.

JFS had to reach
$2 million.

Now, each year, JFS will be
able to apply the interest on the
$2.6 million to the Windows pro-
gram.
The social-service agency se-
cured the $2 million in pledges in
just over a year and collected the
money by last month's deadline.
Windows offers programs to
families grappling with issues of
abuse. JFS provides its Windows
clients with crisis planning, which
could include placement in the
JFS and National Council of Jew-
ish Women-run single-family shel-
ter, Safe Place.
In order to secure the $2 mil-
lion in pledges, JFS set up a com-
mittee comprised of laypeople
from the agency, its professional
staff and members of the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan De-
troit. The committee, co-chaired
by Bloomfield Hills resident War-
ren Coville, "had to do a lot of ed-
ucation," Mr. Goodman said.
"People think domestic violence
is not an issue in the Jewish com-
munity."
The committee asked friends
to host dinners, inviting JFS pro-
fessionals to discuss the program.
Said Mr. Coville, "We ap
proached it on a personal basis,
having lunch with people, bring-
ing a caseworker to talk to them
and asked the big question: We
need $50,000. Can we sign you
up?'
Thirteen of the contributions
were gifts of $50,000 or more.
The endowment does not cov-
er the full operating costs of the
program. The rest of the funding
comes from the JFS general op-
erating fund and the United Way.
