JAGUAR OF TROY

anchor stores support that:
We've got Sears, Hudson's and
Penney's, as opposed to Hudson's
and Nordstrom. I think we will
be affected by it, but we think
it will carve our niche for us. It'll
give us an opportunity to tell our
story," she said.
To that end, Oakland Mall has
launched a "Shop As You Are"
marketing campaign that em-
phasizes the shopping center's
"down-to-earth, honest-to-good-
ness, all-American" appeal, Ms.
Darmetko added.
Somerset, in the meantime,
asked and heard that its regular
customers want a broader mer-
chandise mix, including more
home furnishings and goods for
children and teens, said Rebec-
ca Maccardini, director of oper-
ations for Forbes/Cohen
Properties, the center's owner
and manager.
"They asked for more food.
They asked for greater variety,
in general," she added.
She said Somerset North will
get several sit-down restaurants
and a "food court" that will fea-
ture an array of eateries.
"We've always felt there was
additional need in the market-
place for a broader representa-
tion of merchandise to
complement what we already of-
fer and to serve the customer we
already have, and to bring in
some new tenants that aren't in
the marketplace. In addition, we
will be duplicating some of the
stores that will be elsewhere,
which are stores that have been
requested by other customers
and will be able to round out our
merchandising offering."
Ms. Maccardini refused to con-
firm the opening of The Limited,
Victoria's Secret and Banana Re-
public at Somerset North.
Aside from Hudson's and
Nordstrom department stores,
the only stores that have publicly
announced their tenancy in Som-
erset North are The Gap and
Henri Bendel, an upscale
women's boutique that offers ex-
clusive cosmetics, clothing and
accessories.
A Gap spokesperson said the
company is leasing nearly 6,500
square feet for a deluxe Gap,
with a children's section, a "per-
sonal care" section and shoes.
Somerset draws about 15 per-
cent of its customers from out-
state areas and another 10 to 15
percent from the northwest part
of Oakland County, like Farm-
ington Hills, West Bloomfield
and Novi. But most of its shop-
pers tend to live in the area, as
is true for most shopping centers,
Ms. Maccardini said.
She projects Somerset will
draw twice as much traffic, "at a
minimum," when the new addi-
tion opens. 0
