Holocaust Essay
Winners Named

CHAIM, Children of Holocaust-
survivors Association in Michi-
gan, has announced the winners
of its 11th annual Holocaust Es-
say Competition.
Participating students from
all parochial and public schools
in Oakland and Washtenaw
counties and 300 additional
schools to which CHAIM/or
Holocaust Education Coalition
donated the Holocaust curricu-
lum "Life Unworthy of Life"
were asked to address the top-
ic: "What made it possible for
the Holocaust to occur, and why
is the study of the Holocaust rel-
evant to students today?"
First place and $100 was
awarded to Lesley Ann Maier of
Williamston High School; sec-
ond place and $50 went to
Maria Schriber of Community
High School, Ann Arbor; third
place ($25), Miriam Jaffa, North
Farmington High School.
Honorable mention: Tamira
L. Knight, Ferndale High
School; Emily Fine, Pioneer
High School, Ann Arbor; and
Benjamin Singer, Suzanne Fis-
cher, Andrew Kuziemko, Anjali
Vats, Durga Perla, and Fadilah
Khan from Detroit Country Day
School.
All other participants were
awarded an engraved certifi-
cate.
The contest was chaired by
Betty Rotberg Ellias and Debra
Feldman. Judges were Dr. Sid-
ney Bolkosky, Morry Levin, Eva
Jankelowitz, Allene Kolby, Bar-
bara Cohen, and Debra Feld-
man.
Lesley Ann Maier read her
winning essay, "Why Students
Today Must Study the Holo-
caust," for Governor John En-
gler and state legislators during
the Yom HaShoah Commemo-
ration Ceremony at the Capitol
Rotunda in Lansing on April 16.

Choosing Wine
Is An Art

An evening of wine and hors
d'oeuvres is planned for the sec-
ond annual wine-tasting event
sponsored by the Jewish Fed-
eration's Young Adult Division
7 p.m. Thursday, April 25, in
Bloomfield Hills.
Rabbi Joshua Bennett will
discuss the significance of
kosher wine, and a representa-
tive from the Merchant of Vino
will provide instruction about
choosing a wine that will com-
plement a meal.
Full payment, $20 per person,
must accompany the reserva-
tion.
