also wishful of making an im-
pact on the Federation/JHA
board, to reverse the course of
events.
Unfortunately, the outcome
of that meeting was a "stand-
off" between what appeared to
be a defensive and angry group,
of representatives of the deci-
sion-making faction of the Jew-
ish community and a group of
family members that appeared
to be totally frustrated.
As a participating member of
this Jewish community, I be-
lieve I am aware of current con-
cerns about threats to future
community cohesiveness and
stability. Many express these
concerns in terms of a shrink-
ing population, the rising per-
centage of interfaith marriages
or by modern religious apathy
linked to our materialistic soci-
ety. Historically, we know bet-
ter. Those who study the past
know that these are not new fac-
tors to be overcome.
We survive because we were
a community, and could, at least
count on one another when we
could not count on anyone else.
Perhaps this, then, is the great-
est threat of all: the sense that
we are no longer there for each
other, whether rich or poor,
able-bodied or frail, young or old.

Pleasing the Jews is less impor-
tant than hanging on to any po-
tential voter.
I do not imagine that the eco-
nomic future of America will allow
the triumph of either fascism or
political anti-Semitism. I do not
believe that either Robert Dole or
the mainstream leaders of the Re-
publican Party are anything but
embarrassed by the public ranti-
ngs of Pat Buchanan.
But I will not support a politi-
cal party whose leadership refus-
es to condemn this voice of hatred.
(Just as I will not condone the au-
thority of black leadership that
fears to confront Farrakhan.)
The poor, the oppressed and
the economic "losers" of the world
deserve our sympathy and help.
But they are not necessarily the
moral voices of humanity. If suf-
ficiently provoked, they will em-
brace ideologies that will produce
political repression.
America and the world of eco-
nomic change are vulnerable to
self-destructive voices. Right now,
Mr. Buchanan, despite Dole's vic-
tory, is a dangerous voice of evil.
Jewish votes should not sup-
port any political party that does
not condemn the purveyors of
anti-Semitism in its midst. 1_1
