Health Care
Subject Of Talk

"Ethical Values in Health Care:
Lessons from the Nazi Era" will
be discussed by Dr. Michael J.
Flanzblau 7:30 p.m. Wednesday,
April 24, at Morels: A Michigan
Bistro in Bingham Farms.
The event is sponsored by the
Maimonides Society of the Jew-
ish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit. Medical and osteopath-
ic physicians are invited to par-
ticipate in programs with their
spouses and guests. The society
aims to strengthen bonds with
the Jewish community and Is-
rael through educational, social
and charitable activities.
Dr. Flanzblau will analyze
health care issues from a historic
perspective. Lessons will be
drawn from the actions of the
German medical profession dur-
ing the Nazi period.
Cost for the event is $15 per
person. Dessert reception is in-
cluded. Advance reservations are
required by April 16.

Young Adults
Plan Event

An evening of fine wine, hors
d'oeuvres and good company is
planned for the second annual
wine-tasting event sponsored by
the Jewish Federation's Young
Adult Division 7 p.m. Thursday,
April 25, in Bloomfield Hills.
Rabbi Joshua Bennett will dis-
cuss the significance of kosher
wine and a representative from
the Merchant of Vino will pro-
vide instruction about choosing
a wine that will complement a
meal.
Full payment, $20 per person,
must accompany the reservation.

Yom HaZikaron
At Maple-Drake

Young people will play an im-
portant role in this year's com-
munity-wide Yom HaZikaron
—Israel Remembrance Day—
observance 7 p.m. April 22, at the
Maple-Drake Jewish Communi-
ty Center.
Detroit-area youth groups
have prepared a candlelighting
ceremony to open the evening's
program. Students in the Jew-
ish Federation-sponsored Project
Discovery program in Israel
joined their peers from
Jerusalem's Boyer High School
to create an audio-visual pre-
sentation about battles for

Jerusalem. Children from the
Shaarey Zedek youth choir will
sing songs appropriate to the oc-
casion.
Col. Yair Golan of the Israel
Defense Forces will lower the
flag and give the "order of the
day." The program also will fea-
ture the reciting of Yizkor and
Kaddish.
Sponsoring organizations in-
clude the Michigan/Israel Con-
nection, a program of the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan De-
troit; the Friends of the Israel De-
fense Forces; the • Jewish
Community Center; and The
Jewish News.
The community is invited free
of charge.

Leadership Day
Is Planned

In an effort to better serve the in-
dividual needs of Young Israel
branches and the regions in
which they exist, the National
Council of Young Israel has
scheduled several Synagogue
Leadership Days for branch rab-
bis, presidents, board, sisterhood
and committee members. The
Young Israel Council of Metro-
politan Detroit will host its first
Synagogue Leadership Day on
Sunday, April 28, for the Michi-
gan/Ohio/Illinois tri-state area
branches at the Young Israel of
Oak Park-Oak Woods Branch.
Topics such as youth pro-
gramming, multi-generational
synagogue programming, fund-
raising, long range planning and
shul dynamics will be addressed.
Sessions will be delivered by the
professional staff of National
Council of Young Israel: Rabbi
Pesach Lerner, executive vice
president; Richard Starashfsky,
director of youth and young adult
activities; Rabbi Aaron S.
Tirschwell, national director of
synagogue services; and Jeremy
Bandler, program director, youth
department.

Book Discussion
Is Planned

The Cultural Commission of
Congregation Beth Achim will
hold the next in its Book Bites
discussion series on Tuesday,
April 23, at 7:30 p.m. at the home
of Shelly and Gene Perlman.
The book to be discussed will
be The Bamboo Cradle, by Avra-
ham Schwartzbaum. The re-
viewer will be Julie Solomon.
