The Israeli Arab street
protests and declsratdons seemed
designed not only to voice their
opposition to terror, but also to
quell the suspicions of Israeli
Jews, some of whom were turn-
ing bitter against all Arabs, be
they Hamas, PLO or citizens of
Israel.
The coincidence of two Israeli
Arabs being implicated in aid to
terror, and three of them being
killed themselves by Hezbullah,
illustrated the dichotomous re-
lationship the population has to
Israel.
It was not by chance that the
three Israeli Arabs killed in
Lebanon were Bedouins and
Druze — these communities,
which together number about
200,000, are the only Arabs who
serve in the army.
The driver who transported
the Dizengoff bomber on his mis-
sion lives in a northern Bedouin
village, but is not himself a
Bedouin. (The driver's name and
village were not made public, ev-
idently to prevent possible
reprisals.)
Many of the Bedouins in the
village serve as army trackers
whose main job is to detect ter-
rorist incursions into the coun-
try. One Bedouin villager, a
disabled army veteran, said in a
television interview, "If [the dri-
ver] is guilty, I would be prepared
to kill him myself and take the
consequences."
The instances of Israeli Arab
involvement in terror have been
extremely rare. In 1992 three
Umm el-Fahm-area men infil-
trated an army base at night and
hacked to death three soldiers.
The killers were members of Is-
lamic Jihad. In 1995 three men
from a Negev Bedouin town were
arrested on suspicion of collud-
