ou've scrimped and saved
and figured you were all set
for college ... until that last
tuition increase rolled in.
Now what do you do?
Turn to the Jewish Education-
al Loan Service (JELS) at the Jew-
ish Vocational Service in
Southfield.
Marvin Berman, former staffer
at the Fresh Air Society's Tama-
rack Camps, has been helping stu-
dents and families for 18 months
as director of the JELS program.
Mr. Berman advises students
about scholarships and loans
available through federal, state,
university and local sources, and
guides applicants through the
process.
When other sources have been
exhausted and a student is still
short of budget, JELS often
bridges the gap with an interest-
free loan that does not have to be
repaid until the student leaves col-
lege.
JELS will provide up to $1,500
for freshman year, $2,000 for
sophomore, junior or senior year,
$2,500 for graduate school, and
$3,500 per year for medical
school.
The student must reapply each

year that new funds are needed.
In 1995, JELS had more than
200 inquiries (not all applied); 106
students were awarded $243,000
in loans. JELS also has Tov loans
available for up to $2,000 for stu-
dents attending non-degree cer-
tificate programs, such as
broadcast schools or paralegal
training. Tov loans, while inter-
est-free, must be repaid starting
immediately.
The JELS funds come from
more than 70 philanthropic indi-
viduals and community organi-
zations. The loan repayments by
the students are administered by
Hebrew Free Loan Association.
Mr. Berman considers a major
part of his work to be counseling.
"Lots of students," he says, "don't
have the vaguest idea about bud-
geting." Others need help with the
federal financial aid forms. He
even talks to some about their col-
lege choices. ❑
