INDY 500 (INDIANAPOLIS)
whaling industry, was numbered
among the major American cities,
along with New York, Philadel-
phia and Boston Mr. Lopez' ships
and his agents were known
throughout the trading area of the
Atlantic and the Caribbean.
The exquisite silver rimmonim
which decorate two of the Torah
scrolls were designed by the Colo-
vial silversmith Myer Myers, con-
temporary of the better-known
craftsman, Paul Revere.
Most treasured of the syna-
gogue's artifacts is a 400-year-old
Torah scroll brought from Ams-
terdam at the time of the dedica-
N
tion. The scroll, still intact, is no
longer used because, as Rabbi
Shapiro explains, it is made of
deerskin and is too heavy to be
easily moved from its niche inside
the ark.
Weather permitting, the rab-
bi leads tour groups on a walk out-
side — up Touro Street to the
Jewish cemetery. The inspiration
for a famous poem by Longfellow,
the burial ground dates from 1677,
long before the synagogue itself.
The cemetery was the first com-
munity project of the handful of
Sephardic Jews who had settled
in Newport as early as 1658.
They found religious freedom
in Rhode Island, the colony found-
ed by Roger Williams, banished
from Puritan Massachusetts be-
cause of his belief that religious
intolerance was a threat to civil
peace. With the memory of their
own ancestors' banishment from
Spain, Sephardim flocked to Wil-
iams' newly-founded colony —
/\=-) where the concept of church/state
separation had been first formu-
lated, in the Rhode Island Code of
Laws, as early as 1647.
The rabbi's walk also encom-
passes such nearby sites as St.
Mary's, the Catholic church in
which John F. Kennedy and
Jaqueline Bouvier were married,
/— the National Tennis Museum and
the Baptist Church, the first house
of worship in the United States
built by black freedmen.
A trapdoor in front of the syn-
agogue bimah opens to the cellar
room in which runaway slaves,
passengers on the Underground
Railroad, were hidden ... and lib-
erated to become founders of the
church only a block or two away.
Rabbi Shapiro's lecture tour of
Touro and its historic neighbor-
hood — virtually every house is
registered as a national historic
site — is a walk into more than
three centuries of Jewish history.
And the Orthodox services in the
candle-lit sanctuary — Friday
evenings at 6, Saturday mornings
at 9 — are a rich, spiritual expe-
rience.
Touro (Congregation Jeshuat
Israel) is at 85 Touro St., just
around the corner from the 17th
century main street and water-
f ront. For information, or to join
the Friends of Touro Synagogue,
