heart disease, such as athero-
sclerosis and hypertension, can
predispose a person to arrhyth-
mia. Coffee, alcohol, cigarettes
and recreational drugs can pro-
voke an irregular heartbeat, as
can stress and some cardiac med-
ications. Even drugs used to
treat arrhythmia may provoke
another arrhythmia.
Dr. Moulton suggests that
patients tell their doctor if they
experience an irregular heart-
beat.
"There's no way for a person
to tell on their own what's caus-
ing it. Most likely, there will be
no real implications, but it's
worth taking a closer look
at."
The only visible sign that Ms.
Garcia is wearing a pacemaker
is a small raised area on her
upper chest, just under the right
collarbone, where it is implanted.
She remembers when her two
granddaughters, ages 5 and 6,
rubbed their fingers on the hard
area and asked, "What is that?"
She told them the truth.
"That's grandma's com-
puter." ❑

Dust Mite
Connection

Children with asthma should be
tested for allergy to dust mites,
advises Moira Chan-Yeung, a
professor of medicine at the Uni-
versity of British Columbia in
Vancouver.
A recent study published by
the American Lung Association
found that high levels of dust
mites in the bedroom can wors-
en breathing problems for asth-
matic children, even during the
day.
Previous studies have uncov-
ered an association between dust
mite allergy and asthma, but this
is the first to examine the rela-
tionship between the allergy and
severity of asthma symptoms.
Several thousand dust mites,
which are tiny, microscopic spi-
ders, can be found in a pinch of
house dust.
"If a child with asthma is al-
lergic to dust mites, when he or
she inhales the mites, an aller-
gic reaction takes place in the air-
ways," says Chan-Yeung. "This
leads to inflammation of the air-
ways, which can lead to asthma
attack."
Because dust mite levels in
mattresses have more impact on
asthma severity than floor dust
mites, parents should pay par-
ticular attention to the child's
bedding.
"Plastic mattress and pillow
covers are a very good way of re-
ducing mites," Chan-Yeung sug-
gests. "And it's important to
wash all bedding in hot water."
