CORNERING CANCER

Yom HaShoah to commemorate
the Holocaust. The program will

emy Award winning film Geno-
cide, a documentary on the
Holocaust created by the Simon
Weisenthal Center in Los Ange-
les. A short program will follow
the movie. The community is in-
vited.
The program will take place
at the Young Israel of Southfield,
27705 Lahser Rd.; at 7:30 p.m.
on Monday, April 15. For infor-
mation, contact Phil Goldmeier,

he pace of cancer
research has entered
a phase of
exponential
acceleration.
Scientists are
engaged in
thousands of new
projects to detect,
diagnose, treat
and prevent
malignancies. A,
The Weizmann
Institute of Science
in Rehovot, Israel,
is part of the
thrust. In years
past, Weizmann
scientists
demonstrated that
cancer development is a multi-stage
process, and identified the oncogene associated
with myeloid leukemia. Today, their research includes
magnetic resonance spectroscopy procedures to detect
breast cancer... photodynamic techniques for pinpointing
chemotherapy... development of a lung cancer vaccine effective in
mice... and projects bearing on prostate cancer, ovarian cancer and
melanoma. They have also joined the universal pursuit of non-invasive
genetic therapies requiring successful identification of genes that induce
malignancies and genes that suppress them... notably p53, which Weizmann
scientists were first to clone. s All over the world, interdisciplinary
cancer research with sophisticated equipment needs the encouragement
of public and private resources responsive to burgeoning opportunities.
