Sweet
Dreams

More than a Pastry Shop!
More than a Coffee House!
It's a Sweet Dream come true

self-portrait of the artist whose
known oils number fewer than
20 examples. This is the only oil
of a Jewish subject by Picart to
have appeared at auction in re-
cent years.
Another painting, the excep-
tionally rare and early-Dutch
School Interior of the Ashkenazi
Synagogue in Amsterdam with
the Upraising of the Torah Scroll
dates to 1680. The synagogue,
built in 1671, served a commu-
nity at the time numbering some
7,500 members, more than that
of the older Sephardi communi-
ty. The synagogue was destroyed
in the 1930s.
Among other paintings are an
Edouard Moyse oil, Rabbi and
Student; a synagogue interior
dated 1810 by Edouard Brandon;
and Isador Kau mane's Portrait
of a Rabbi.

Also on offer is a complete set
of 12 color lithographs for the
Jerusalem windows produced in
1963 by Sorlier and individually
signed and numbered by Marc
Chagall.
Four manuscript sukkah dec-
orations date to early-18th-cen-
tury Italy and depict vignettes of
biblical episodes in pen and ink
wash, while a glazed Vienna ce-
ramic Passover plate dated to
Carlsbad, 1938, is of poignant
note. Such pieces, dating to the
doomed communities of Europe
on the eve of the Holocaust, are
particularly rare. The famous
synagogue of Carlsbad, which
served a then-vibrant communi-
ty, was destroyed on Nov. 10,
1938.
A number of interesting Eng-
lish and European ceramics,
prints and sculptures are also in-
} eluded in the sale, along with a
European private collection of
Jewish silver ritual objects of the
18th and 19th centuries. Such
items appear with increasing rar-
ity on the art market.
This collection includes im-
portant Chanukah lamps from
Poland and Germany, fine Kid-
> dush cups from Augsburg, as
well as an extremely rare early-
19th century spice tower applied
with figures.
There are a number of pieces
by celebrated 18th-century Ju
daica specialists, German. silver-
smiths Rudiger Herfurth and
Anton Gutwein. Gutwein's im-
portant etrog container, dating
to 1800, is apparently a special
commission and an example of
his mature style.
