STN Entertainment Rock 'n' Roll Cathedral hile Sanctum is one of Pontiac's hottest dance clubs, open just over a year, tonight marks the venue's first foray into the hectic and lu- crative arena of national-act concerts. The English quintet Radiohead performs with opener the David Gray Band; tickets for the show disappeared long ago. Sellout or not, though, the owners of Sanctum (who also happen to run the coun- try-western bar Diamonds and Spurs down the street) waited until they were sure the venue could handle the throngs of metro area groovesters. They also wanted to be certain the club could accommodate the technical and logistical demands of a na- tonal touring act before taking on that responsibility. "With a new venue like this, so many things go into making (shows) run OK," says Sanctum's Kevin Duncan. "You want to make sure all the bugs are out." Especially when you're talking about a building constructed for anything but 10-foot-high speakers and sweaty mosh pits. Sanctum, like St. Andrews Hall in Detroit, used to be a church. An all- stone building, the owners went about improving acoustics by padding walls and hanging curtains to soften the sound. The members of Radiohead, whose second album on Capitol records, The Bends, is making head- way on U.S. charts, came togeth- er at the end of the 1980s "out of sheer boredom," says singer Thom Yorke. Their official debut as a group, in the summer of 1991, drew 20 record company offers, and one of the band's first singles, "Creep," became what New York Newsday called "a worthy addition to rock's lexicon of angst." Quite a compli- ment. On April 10, Sanctum and Belkin Productions host their sec- ond national act, recent break- through pop act Dog's Eye View, a.k.a. Peter Stuart. A coffeehouse troubadour from New York City (who honed his craft while study- ing film in Chicago), Stuart actually hitched onto his star in Detroit. The singer/song- writer was opening for a band that was opening for the Counting Crows here, met the Crows and ended up touring with the mega-band through the United States and Europe. Stuart claims that crowds react most passionately to his darker songs. Bleak and moody, irreverent and loud, these two bands inaugurate Sanctum's once-hallowed ground as the metro area's newest rock 'n' roll cathedral. —Liz Stevens Radiohead performs at 8 p.m. tonight with special guest David Gray.
