This was the watch tower where guards watched for people trying to escape — a dra- matic reminder of the formida- ble barriers in this once-divided city. Our tour now takes us past several landmark sites. One is a stately yellow building on Niederkirkner, originally the Prussian Parliament House and now the home of the Berlin sen- ate. Across the street is the Mar- tin Gropius Haus, badly damaged during the war — now re-opened as a large exhibition hall. Soon we come to another piece of the actual wall. This is one massive slab with concrete pip- ing on top — and graffiti on its surface, too. "It's the only piece left on the western boundary," says Mr. Gay. "And this Piece will remain" At the center of Niederkirch and Wilhelm, Mr. Gay explains that this site was the scene of sev- eral daring escape attempts, of- ten by ingenious means. But once they reached safety in West ;17, Berlin, people kept their means of escape a secret so that others could try the same way. Then, too, they kept their escapes se- cret because if their escape be- came known, relatives left behind were punished. Soon we arrive at Checkpoint Charlie, which was once the busiest of all crossing points. /— Now, all around the area are the signs of construction in booming eastern Berlin. The site itself, marked by a tower at the busy intersection, draws its share of tourists. Cam- eras are poised, tripods are set up and people stand looking up at \ Th the watch tower. For those of us on the tour, the wall comes alive again as a pro- found part of the city's history. ❑ Publicity Deadlines The normal deadline for local news and publicity items is noon Thursday, eight days prior to issue date.
