Was the date she was anticipating the cat's pajamas?

Q: in recent years I have seen a
lot of Jewish men in the House and
the Senate, but not as many Jew-
ish women. That got me wondering:
Who was the first Jewish woman to
serve in the Congress?

A: Her name was Florence
Prag Kahn.
Born in 1868 in Salt Lake City,
Florence spent much of her youth
in California, and graduated in
1887 from the University of Cal-

A: Jean-Claude van Damme,
move over.
The first modem Jewish self-
defense organization, according
to historian Simon Dubnow, was
a committee formed in 1664 in
Lemberg, Germany. Christian
students attacked Jews at a local
university, and the Jews orga-
nized to fight back.
In response to pogroms, Russ-
ian Jews in the 19th- and early
20th-century created self-defense
groups. After the Kishinev
pogrom of 1903, a group of Jew-
ish youth, mostly Zionists, be-
came more organized, then were
quickly suppressed by the czar.

Q: Is it true that singer Carly
Simon, who is Jewish, wrote her
famous song "Anticipation" about
a radical Islamic activist?

ifornia-Berkeley. She worked as
a teacher, then in 1899 married
actor Julius Kahn— a move that
later would bring her to Con-
gress.
• Julius Kahn, born in 1861 in
Germany, moved with his fam-
ily to San Francisco and began
his stage career when he was 19.
Then in 1890 he decided to study
law, and by 1892 was serving in
the California State Legislature.
A Republican, Kahn was elected
in 1898 to the House of Repre-
sentatives, where he served un-
til his death in 1924.
In addition to his political in-
terests, Kahn was a member of
Congregation Emanu-El in San
Francisco and a founder of the
Jewish Educational Society. He
was an active anti-Zionist, and
even cabled President Woodrow
Wilson to make clear his opposi-
tion to the establishment of a
Jewish state in Palestine.
After Kahn's death in 1924, his
wife was elected to take over his
seat in the House. Florence Prag
Kahn was reelected several
times, serving until her retire-
ment in 1937. She also was a
member of the House of Repre-
sentatives' Committee on Mili-
tary Affairs.

ern Asia, especially the Malay
archipelago. Well before the first
century C.E., citriculture spread
to India, the east coast of Africa
and then to the eastern Mediter-
ranean, which includes the Land
of Israel. The Torah
mentions citrus but
once: the etz pri hadar
("fruit of the goodly .
tree") — the citron or
etrog — in Leviticus
23:40.
Oranges were
brought to Eretz
Yisrael only in the
early 18th century,
probably from the
Iberian peninsula.
Gradually, especial-
ly in the early 20th century, other
citrus species such as tangerines
and grapefruits were grown. In-
cidentally, "Jaffa" is a com-
mercial name. Among Israeli
agronomists this variety of
orange is known as the
Shamouti.
Although Israel is one of the
world's major citrus producers,
in the 1970s many Israeli citrus
growers replaced their orange
groves for a new, more lucrative
produce: the avocado (a native of
America).

A: In all fairness, he wasn't a
radical Islamic activist at the
time. He was a British citizen of
Greek ancestry, a famous singer
himself over whom many women
swooned. His name was Cat
Stevens, and Carly Simon did in-
deed write "Anticipation" about
a date she was about to have with
him.
Back then, Cat — today a con-
vert to Islam who goes by the
name Yusuf Islam — spent a lot
of time singing about the "Peace
Train." My, how times have
changed. Several years ago, after
Yusuf Islam made numerous
anti-American remarks,
a group of former fans
publicly burned his
records. Yusuf was
thrilled, and said he
wished "they would bum
them all." He also is
an outspoken and vehe-
ment critic of Israel and Zionism.
And Carly, well, she married
singer James Taylor, seemingly
disappeared, divorced James,
married a non-celebrity and is re-
viving her career. If nothing else,
she must still be pulling in resid-
uals from "Anticipation"— which
became the theme of a TV com-
mercial for ketchup.
