linger near its grave — though
dirt and stones and a large rock
(which inspired the modern
monument) could contain it.
This explains the Jewish custom
\_ of tossing dirt onto a coffin, and
/---placing a small rock atop a grave
one visits, she said.
"Stones, grass, twigs are all
antidotes to the ghost of the
dead," Mrs. Tarnoff-Cooper said.
She cautioned listeners not to
be surprised when rabbis scoff
at the suggestion that much of
Jewish tradition was inspired
/— by ancient beliefs in magic. To-
day, rabbis speak of stones
placed on graves as a sign of re-
spect, showing that a family
member or friend has not been
forgotten. They say that mirrors
are covered during Shiva be-
cause one shouldn't be con-
cerned with his appearance at a
/— time of mourning. They will ex-
plain the breaking of the glass
at a wedding as an expression
of sadness for the destruction of
Jerusalem.
Mrs. Tarnoff-Cooper said the
reasons behind traditions have
"been interpreted and reinter-
preted" so many times that their
,—Dnginal source has been lost.
Rabbi Bergman, however,
said that Halachah does, in fact,
provide a reason for many Jew-
ish traditions, and "it does our
predecessors a disservice to say
everything they believed was
based on superstition.
"I'm very hesitant about this
reductionist view that our an-
cestors were ignorant and we
are the enlightened ones. You
cannot say that those who pro-
duced the Talmud were just a
bunch of people who believed, 'If
you do something, God will do
something for you, too.' That's a
manipulation of God."
