Re-opened after extensive renovation, it still draws large crowds. Touring this musuem with its varied multi-media exhibits is a way for modern visitors to re- trace the voyage of their rela- tives. From the baggage room, I walked upstairs to the second floor and entered the registry room with its giant arched win- dows, American flag and wood- en benches. Overwhelming was the fact of so many people crowded into one space. At its peak, Ellis Is- land processed 7000 individu- als a day, and most immigrants stayed there three to five hours. After the Great Hall, I fo- cused on specific exhibits about the immigrant experience. The "Family Treasures" ex- hibit showed display cases with an assortment of valued objects which the immigrants carried on their journey; the items were later donated to the museum by their families. Another exhibit, titled "New Americans," featured close-up photos of immigrants. I then saw an exhibit about Ellis Is- land itself. Titled "Ellis Island Chronicles," it included photos, maps and scale models to docu- ment the expansion of the is- land. Before I left, I watched an in- formative film, "Island of Hope, Island of Tears," shown in the museum's auditorium. The film gave background information capturing the difficulties of the journeys, narrated with de- scriptions from the immigrants themselves. ❑ Publicity Deadlines The normal deadline for local news and publicity items is noon Thursday, eight days prior to issue date.
