These artifacts were integrat- ed into the new, existing struc- ture, which was dedicated in 1841 and stands as the second oldest synagogue building in the United States (after Touro in Newport, RI) and the oldest in continuous use. As the first stop in a two-hour tour of historic Charleston, Jan- ice Kahn, a professional guide — and Beth Elohim congregant — leads travelers through the ele- gant Greek Revival structure, so typical of the many other state- ly, neoclassical buildings which characterize the historic district of Charleston. A painting in the social hall of the synagogue recalls an earlier event in Charleston Jewish his- tory, the role of the community in the Revolution, and the tragic death of Francis Salvador, the first Jew to fall in the War for In- dependence. Salvador, member of a Sephardic family whose descen- dants are still Beth Elohim con- / gregants, had migrated from London to Charleston shortly be- fore the outbreak of the Revolu- tion. He quickly joined the revolutionary cause and in 1775, by dint of his education and abil- ity, was appointed to the Revo- lutionary Congress of South Carolina which had established itself as the legislative body of the newly independent state. The young man — he was 28 at the time and already active in the Beth Elohim congregation — was the first Jew ever named to a legislative body in America or anywhere in the modern world. When the British attacked Charleston a year later, Salvador joined the revolutionary army in defending the outskirts to the city. He was ambushed by a British-led band of Indians and, as the synagogue painting de- picts, shot and scalped. Another memorial to Salvador is a bronze plaque in the nearby City Hall Park. Close to Beth Elohim, also, is the congregation's Coming Street Cemetery, established in 1764, 20 years before the synagogue building itself was dedicated. Gravestones identify the remains of Jews who fought and died in all the nation's wars — from the Revolutionary War to the Civil War to World War II. Charleston Jews have always been loyal citizens of the city and the state which had given them religious freedom. It was a loyal- ty that extended no less to their support of the Confederacy.
