Scent Of A Movie

Ah, the fragrant aroma of wine, wood and garlic.

ELIZABETH APPLEBAUM ASSOCIATE EDITOR

Q: I'm a Jew, and sure, I'm proud
that Einstein was Jewish and so
were all those doctors who discov-
ered cures to really awful diseases
and everything. But what really
concerns me is "smell-o-vision" —
those movies from decades ago
that were accompanied by scent.
Could there be a Jewish connec-
tion to the "smellies"? Oh, please,
oh please say there is!

A: We're glad you sent (get it
— like scent? ha ha ha ha ha!)
your great question our way. And
you'll be happy to know that ac-
cording to author Patrick Robert-
son, writing in the Guiness Film
Facts & Feats, the first feature
smellie was Scent of Mystery —
created by Michael Todd Jr., son
of the producer born Avrom
Girsch Goldbogen.
Released in 1960, Scent of
Mystery had its grand premiere
at the Cinestage in Chicago and
featured such lovely aromas as
garlic, paint, wine, wood, boot pol-
ish, pipe tobacco and ocean, all of
'which flowedinth. the theaterat
the appropriate moment.
Alas, "smellie" pictures never
really made it, though filmmak-
er John Waters still loves them,
producing his own, Polyester, in
1982. And it would appear that
composer Alexander Scriabin
had something similar
in mind. Years
before Todd and
Waters were
even born, Scri-
abin dreamed of
symphonic perfor-
mances that would en-
compass all the senses.
He envisioned colors
dancing on a large screen,
a masseuse rubbing the shoul-
ders of listeners and fragrant aro-
mas wafting through the concert
hall as his mysterious and haunt-
ing music played.
By the way, you should know
that Mike Todd Jr. was not the
only one with a Jewish connec-
tion who made an invaluable con-
tribution to the fine arts. Milton
Gunzburg was the guy who came
up with "Natural Vision 3-D,"
used in such brilliant films as the
1952 Bwana Devil. It may seem
nutty now, but Gunzburg was
laughing all the way to the bank:
he made more than $6 million in
one year with 3-D glasses.

Q: What are the Noachide laws?

A: The Noachide laws are bib-

lical edicts which all men, re-
gardless of their religion, are
obligated to observe.
The rabbis explained that

while Jews must follow all the ever. He had no known Jewish
mitzvot, or commandments, a ancestors (most were Scottish),

are the prohibitions
against idolatry,
blasphemy, murder,
theft, eating from a
live animal and de-
viant sexual behav-
ior, as well as the
obligation to estab-
lish a legal system
(primarily to enforce
the prohibitions).
A gentile who ac-
cepts the Noachide
laws is termed ager-
toshav, , a "resident-
stranger," and is
entitled both to hon-
or and material sup-
port from the
Jewish community.
Maimonides held
