on as a member of Palmach's un-
derground elite, transporting
displaced Jews from Europe to
Palestine.
While he was working in
Italy, Mr. Hod, who had no pre-
vious interest in flying, discov-
ered the airplane's vast potential
as he watched a group of orphan
refugees fly off in a Palestine-
bound plane. Minutes after the
operation, the Italian police,
noticing the lights in the
makeshift airfield, came and ar-
rested him.
After three days in jail, Mr.
Hod became determined to fly,
returned to Rome and began
taking flying lessons. From there
he went to Czechoslovakia to at-
tend a military flying school.
Five months later, Mr. Hod and
a group of Israeli pilots were giv-
en the opportunity to fly Free
Czech planes to Israel. Flying
a Spitfire plane and leading his
first formation, Mr. Hod took off
for Lod Airport.
"I left British Mandatory
Palestine (three years earlier)
and landed in Israel. I saw
armed Israeli soldiers walking
openly in the streets," said Mr.
Hod. "I was wearing boots, my
flying jacket and trousers. That's
all I had."
From there, Mr. Hod went on
to a series of high-profile jobs.
Upon leaving the air force five
months before the Yom Kippur
War, Mr. Hod became deputy
defense minister; founded Car-
go Airlines, the first independent
airline to fly products from Is-
rael to Europe; presided over El
Al; became a partner in an aero-
space company; and served as
chairman of the board of Israel
Aircraft Industries until his re-
tirement.
Although none of his subse-
quent experiences compare to
the "seven fat years" he spent
as commander of the IAF, Mr.
Hod, who still flies recreational-
ly, never looks back.
"I've never really been disap-
pointed with what I did," he said.
"I always had an urge to do
things better and more effi-
ciently and to do things that
were never done before." 0
