PASSOVER page 123 Weight watchers already have been warned that one piece of matzah contains 160 calories, equivalent to two slices of bread. Two kneidlach contain 150 calo- ries. As in previous years, Jerusalem's water supply will be drawn from Yarkon springs, rather than from the national water carrier which receives wa- ter from the Galilee. Religious sources have in the past com- plained that water in the lake becomes chametz because of bread bait used by the fisher- men. Rabbi Ovadia Yosef has dis- missed this fear, but religious perfectionists want to take no chances. The collective ritual "sale" to an Arab of all chametz owned by the government will be watched carefully this year after it was re- vealed that Ahmed Mugrabi, who in the past had been the pur- chaser, was actually the son of a Jewish mother. To tens of thousands of em- ployees of major institutions, Passover marks the time when their company gives them valu- able gifts or pays them special bonuses. Last year, McDonald's non- kosher restaurants made a spe- cial gesture for patrons who draw the line at eating bread on the holiday. They made their buns with potato flour and fried the chickens in matzah crumbs. The day after Passover, Is- raelis of North African descent will set out their festive tables loaded with delicacies in cele- bration of their traditional Maimouna holiday, which has be- come a national folk festival. But not all Israelis will be at home. The festival marks the ex- odus of the Israelites from Egypt, and many modern Israelis take the exodus literally by going on trips abroad during the long hol- iday. Indications are that in ex- cess of 50,000 Israelis will be away from the country during this period. Every available plane and flight has been booked, and it is expected that on the eve of the holiday all records for departure will be broken at Ben-Gurion Air- port, with a plane departing every five or six minutes. The most popular destination is London, but there is hardly a corner of the world where Israelis will not be found. Many young people, heading for exotic desti- nations in the Far East, expect to take part in special seders arranged by the Chabad move- ment. Last year, no fewer than 500 Israeli backpackers munched matzah and asked the four ques- tions at a seder in Bangkok, Thailand. The Israeli seder in Katmandu, Nepal, is already a tradition of some years stand- ing. 11 IT'S KIND OF LIKE REVERSE STICKER SHOCK. cleaners CALL 313-537-8050 FOR YOUR NEAREST LOCATION Wine And Charoset Stains On Your Table Linens, Seder Duds, Rugs & Carpet?
