Still, they want to make sure their application is completed well before that anniversary. They even took and passed their writ- ten naturalization exams in De- cember. "We want to be ready for our citizenship when the time comes," said Dr. Mishulin, who went With her husband to Jewish Family Service in Southfield for a natu- ralization workshop last week. "It's helpful to be here and ask questions if there is something confusing on the application." During the workshop, held from 7:30 a.m.-9 p.m. on March 14, 433 eligible Jewish immi- grants from the former Soviet Union completed their applica- tions for naturalization. Staff from the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Soci- ety in New York and JFS were on hand to help the New Americans fill out the four-page application, which includes biographical in- formation, marital history, and questions about memberships in organizations and employment. They also helped finger-print and photograph those applying for cit- izenship. Thirty volunteers, including Walker M. Stark of Huntington Woods, helped with the process. Mr. Stark, who emigrated to the United States from Germany in 1938 when he was 19, spent part of the afternoon asking applicants for their green cards and check- ing to see that they had been in the United States for the required period. Mr. Stark felt it was important for him to be there because "when I came to this country, people helped me and I was grateful. This is my way of giving some of it back." Once the workshop partici- pants left with completed appli- cations, they could send their paperwork, along with the $90 processing fee, to the Immigra- tion and Naturalization Service office in Detroit. 'We're getting people who have been in this country for between six and eight years," said Mar- garet Demant, who chairs citi- zenship events for JFS. "When I asked them why they waited so long to file, they said they are afraid of government and bu- reaucracy. "None of these people are strangers to JFS. Here, they feel Over 400 Jewish immigrants completed their applications. they're among their own, and they are familiar with this building and the staff. I think that's the reason we're so swamped." Among those filling out the forms, posing for pictures and get- ting finger-printed were Vladimir and Lana Ostrovskly of West Bloomfield. Although the couple became stateless when they left the for-_ mer Soviet Union, they said they already feel like U.S. citizens.
