Yitzhak Rosenberg with his daughter, Blima.

said her children were being sex-
ually abused, and she provided
psychological and medical reports
to prove her case, Ms Rayner said.
"She seemed like a very stable
person," Ms. Rayner said. .
Chana vowed she would kill
herself and the children if Ms.
Rayner didn't help.
Ms. Rayner promised to do
what she could, then went to New
York to meet with Chana and her
children. The Rosenbergs lived in
"a nice town home" with toys
everywhere. Chana told Ms.
Rayner that her ex-husband
stayed downstairs, where, she
said, he would smear the walls
with feces just to irritate her.
Ms. Rayner believed Chana
when she spoke of her children's
sexual abuse and besides, she
could see it for herself, she said.
"I've seen children like this,"
she said. "It's like you're talking
to them, but they're not there."
Zelig would pinch Ms. Rayner
hard, and run into her, ramming
his head into her chest, she said.
"There was so much anger. It
was like a bull butting into you."
But perhaps most damning were
the pictures.
Lydia Rayner said Chana
showed her black-and-white pho-
tographs of boys, including Zelig,
engaged in sexual acts with
unidentified adults. She did not
know if they showed Yitzhak,
though it was clear to Ms. Rayn-
er that the adults in the pictures
were Jewish men. (They wore
kippot and had payot.)
Yitzhak Rosenberg insists the
photos don't exist. "Don't you
think that if she really had these
pictures she would have brought
them to court?" he asked. If a
judge had seen pictures showing
Yitzhak engaged in sexual acts
with Zelig, he asked, would the
court really have awarded him
custody of the children?
Chana remained briefly in Mis-
sissippi, with Ms. Rayner helping
her emotionally and financially.

Then Chana disappeared,
again.
Today, Ms. Rayner said has no
idea where Chana Rosenberg is,
but she has no doubts about what
happened to her children before
their flight.
"I saw the reports (of sexual
abuse)," she said. "I saw the pic-
tures."

itzhak Rosenberg finally
received his divorce from
Chana in 1991, months af-
ter she left New York.
In his decision, Judge Robert
Meehan of Rockland County,
N.Y., dissolved the marriage "by
reason of the cruel and inhuman
treatment of the defendant
(Yitzhak) by the plaintiff
(Chana)." He granted Yitzhak full
custody of both Zelig and Chaya,
and allowed Chana only super-
vised visits.
Detective Robert McDermott
of the Clarkstown, N.Y., police de-
partment is in charge of the case.
This is the longest he has been
searching for anyone on the run.
"It's like looking for a needle in
a haystack," he said. "It's very
easy for some people to just slip
away."
He knows Chana has secured <
false identification, and believes
she could be working as a nurse.
Det. McDermott has followed
up on a number of leads in the
Rosenberg case. About three
years ago Chana was seen in a
Southern state (he doesn't give
details): "We almost had her."
There have been no confirmed <
sightings since.
For the past five years, the Na-
tional Center for Missing and Ex-
ploited Children (NCMEC) has
been active in the search for
China (whose English name is
Annette) Rosenberg and her chil-
dren. As with all other cases it
handles, NCMEC became in-
volved only after police and judges
made their determination.
