KOMMEL, 68, former Detroiter of Longboat Key, Fla., died March 7. After his retirement in 1988 from the practice of otolaryngology in Mt. Clemens, Dr. Kommel spent seven months a year on Long- boat Key and the balance of the year on his sailboat on the Great Lakes. Dr. Kommel was a graduate of Wayne State University and the University of Michigan Med- ical School. He was a veteran of World War H. Dr. Kommel served as. a president of the Ma- comb County Medical Society of Michigan and as chief of staff and chief of surgery at St. Joseph's Hospital in Mt. Clemens. Dr. Kommel also staffed an ear, nose and throat clinic for the Senior Friendship Center in Venice, Fla. A longtime member of the Great Lakes Yacht Club and Great Lakes Cruising Club, Dr. Kommel was an avid sailor, sail- boat racer and scuba diver. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Eve; son and daugh- ter-in-law, Eric and Patti of Huntington Woods; daughters and sons-in-law, Deby and Mark Baxter of Johnson City, Tenn., Jody Kommel and Jeff Meyers of Grosse Pointe; sister and brother-in-law, Muriel and Hal Fife of Van Nuys, Calif.; six grandchildren.
