sis, known for brilliant colors, dy-
namic composition and symbolic
figures in his spiritual art naifstyle,
also works on commissions. His
newest collectibles are embroideries
— tallit and tefillin bags and a chal-
lah cover. Jacqueline Tuteur's af-
fordable and colorful computerized
art — including variations on the
Star of David silk-screened on pa-
per, wood and glass — appeals to
"techies."
Music and video tapes and discs
with Jewish content are popular.
Traditional, contemporary, Euro-
pean, Israeli, Yiddish, Ladino, He-
brew, English, sentimental,
humorous, mitzvah and holiday
themes — they are a refreshing re-
lief from today's secular music.

Favorite gifts with
Jewish themes.

The concept of hiddur mitzvah,
to carry out a mitzvah with beau-
ty, accounts for the many attractive
home ritual objects in Judaic bou-
tiques and bookstores. Pieces in pre-
cious metals, ceramics, glass and
fibers, bejeweled, inspire recipients
to carry out mitzvot and to start col-
lecting Judaica. Examples include
lciddush cups, Chanukah menorot,
dreidels, candles, apple and honey
dishes, tzedakah boxes.
Some artists have designed ritu-
al pieces relating to special inter-
ests. Havdalah sets, Chanukah
menorot and mezuzah cases are
available with music, sports and
train motifs — among others.
One might commission or pur-
chase an authentic, parchment
Torah scroll. More affordable ver-
sions, less than a foot high, are also
available — with an embroidered
velvet cover or on a lucite stand
and pedestal. A framed Torah scroll,
open to the Haftorah portion, has
a plaque showing the celebrant's
name, date of bar/bat mitzvah and
the portion's title. ❑
