W
hen a man faces his Maker;
he will have to account for
those (God-given) pleasures
of life which he failed to enjoy.
— Talmud
Judaism has always been a joyous re-
ligion. While Jews through the millen-
nia have suffered at the hands of others,
the Torah and Talmud place much more
emphasis on happy occasions, doing good
deeds and celebrating life. Just as the Sab-
bath ends the work week with a time of
rest and reflection, simchas — happy oc-
casions — provide a break from routine
and the daily toil of our existence. They,
like the Jewish holidays, should be an
uplifting experience.
That is one of the reasons we creat-
ed this CELEBRATE! section. We hope
this special sup-
plement to The
Jewish News will
give you a broad
range of tasteful
ideas for your
next simcha.
Our goal was
to provide inter-
esting articles
about Detroit area locations, styles and
kinds of affairs, from the simple to the el-
egant, be they at your home or syna-
gogue, restaurant or hotel. We tried
whenever possible to include simple tips
or checklists to help you with your de-
cision-making for your next simcha.
By no means is this special section all-
inclusive. However, through examples
provided by your friends and neighbors,
this inaugural issue of CELEBRATE! can
be a handy guide and idea book, a com-
pilation of merchants and services just
waiting to assist you, and an interest-
ing look at how those around you mark
happy occasions in their lives.
In addition, in several places, our writ-
ers describe some simple ways to Jew-
ishly share your happy event.
So, go ahead! CELEBRATE!
