But many people in our Jewish
community have problems with
his conservative social positions.
Jews in this state are still liber-
als; in that, I think we're reflec-
tive of the broader national
community."
Dr. Frank Boehm, a professor
of obstetrics and gynecology at
Vanderbilt University in
Nashville, met Mr. Alexander
when they were both undergrad-
uates there.
"He's been one of the few Re-
publicans who can get support
from Jews," he said. "The fact is
that there are a lot of Jews in this
state who are Clinton supporters
— but Lamar's candidacy will
make them think twice. He came
into power here at a time when
Tennessee badly needed some
healing; he provided that, and it's
something the nation as a whole
needs now."
Mr. Alexander, he said, "nev-
er showed any extremes of be-
havior. He knows what's right
and what's wrong. He isn't driven
by interest groups to the same ex-
tent that other candidates are."
The Alexander campaign has
emphasized his business experi-
ence and downplayed his role in
government. But the vast major-
ity of the 56-year old candidate's
career has been spent in one form
of government service or anoth-
en
After law school, he served as
clerk to a circuit court judge in
New Orleans, and then as leg-
islative assistant to Sen. Howard
Baker. Later, he served in the
Nixon White House and managed
a gubernatorial campaign in Ten-
nessee before beginning an 8-year
stint as governor himself.
And from 1991 to 1993, he
served as Secretary of Education
in a department he now wants to
abolish.
That background, which may
be a liability with the broader
electorate, may be a plus for
Mr. Alexander in a Jewish com-
munity that continues to value
government experience in presi-
dential candidates.
"He has a lot of attractive char-
acteristics," said Marshall Breger,
a lotigtime Jewish Republican
leader who served in the Reagan
and Bush administrations. "But
he has to start winning primaries,
not just finishing third."
`There will be some significant
contributions from the Jewish
community, because they don't
want to see Buchanan at the top
of the ticket," said Charles Brooks
of the National PAC. "Jewish Re-
publicans, by and large, will stick
with Dole," said a leading GOP
activist in Washington. "They
may not be wildly enthusiastic --
but in general, they respond to or-
ganization, to endorsements. The
fact that [Sen.] Al D'Amato
supports Dole means more than
Alexander's own claim that
he's the only alternative to
Buchanan." ❑
