ing Mr. Buchanan's appeal under
the GOP banner — until recent
events made denial a kind of bad
joke.
For Jewish Republicans to suc-
ceed in the important mission of
creating a strong Jewish presence
in the party, they will have to do
a much better job of convincing
Jewish voters that their eyes are
wide open about the extremists
and the conspiracy nuts, and that
they will wage effective battle
against them in the interests of a
more moderate form of Republi-
canism.
Apologists for the worst ele-
ments in the party will only
strengthen the Democratic hold
on Jewish voters.
The harsh denunciation of Mr.
Buchanan by the National Jew-
ish Coalition, the central body of
Jewish Republicans, may have
reflected the kind of up-front ac-
knowledgement of the party's
problems that it will take to con-
vince more Jews that there is val-

Three weeks ago, he was a mere
footnote to the 1996 presidential
contest — a curious figure in a
flannel shirt, offering himself as
the latest political "outsider," de-
spite a long career in government.
Today, former Tenn. Gov .
Lamar Alexander is the great
moderate hope, the man many
mainstream Republican leaders
see as the only viable alternative
to the extremism of columnist Pat
Buchanan and the doddering in-
effectiveness of Senate Majority
Leader Bob Dole. And unlike Mr.
Buchanan, many say, he has de-
veloped solid relations with the
Jewish community over the
years.
But questions remain about
Alexander's longshot presiden-
tial quest. There are hints of fi-
nancial dealings that could
emerge as major controversies.
And despite his surprisingly
strong third-place finishes in the
Iowa caucuses and the New
Hampshire primary, Mr. Alexan-
der lacks Mr. Dole's money and
organization. More importantly,
he may lack support from party
leaders who are increasingly des-
perate to stop Mr. Buchanan be-
fore he jeopardizes GOP control
of the House and Senate.
"The party apparatus is
pulling out all the stops for Dole,"
said Charles Brooks, executive
director of the National PAC, the
largest pro-Israel political action
committee. "That doesn't help
