journalists have said roughly the
same thing, among them colum-
nist Shulamit Hareven. She
writes: "On one TV channel they
talk of panic and on the other of
hysteria. And the newspapers tell
us that we are all frightened. But,
in fact, people get up in the morn-
ing, leave their homes and go to
work.
"Water is still coming out of
the taps and the shops are filled
with food and customers. The
clinics are operating as usual and
the courts are in session. Our
cities have not been devastated
and we haven't been subjected to
daily bombardments. Our roads
are not clogged with reFigees and
the Red Cross has not sent in
convoys with food and medicines.
"This isn't war," Ms. Hareven
declares, "but a conflict with one
despicable group of terrorists who
can cause us a lot of pain but cer-
tainly can't cause our collapse ...
And while its not pleasant to re-
main passive, to keep wondering
where they will hit us next, peo-
ple in Oklahoma, London and a
lot of other places have the same
problem. Yet nowhere else is fear
so highlighted."
Ms. Hareven concludes: 'We'll
have.to take care of the Hamas
and we will. Meanwhile, let's re-
gain our sense of proportion."
This is good advice, and if fol-
. lowed will raise the morale of Is-
raelis and lower that of
Ayatollahs.

Bathing Safety For The Entire Family.

More than 5,000 children are scalded by hot water in the tub each year, according to the National
Safe Kids Campaign, prompting manufacturers to respond with several engineering breakthroughs.
One innovation from Grohe is Grohmix, a thermostatic valve for showers and tubs that allows you to
preset the temperature anywhere between 60 and 110 degrees. A safety stop set at 100 degrees pre-
vents children from accidentally scalding themselves.
The Grohmix also is a pressure
balancing valve, which prevents
temperature shocks from sudden
pressure changes in cold or hot
water. Whether a toilet is flushed
or dishwasher turned on, your
shower is never interrupted.
Almost all 50 states now
require that these types of safety
valves by used in all new con-
struction.

Now We Need
More Republicans

JAMES D. BESSER

WASHINGTON CORRESPONDENT

The rise of conservative colum-
nist Pat Buchanan in the
Republican presidential sweep-
stakes has led to an unseemly
glee among Jewish Democrats.
For years, they have scoffed at
efforts to recruit Jews to the Re-
publican cause, arguing there is
no place for Jews in a party that
actively seeks to include Christ-
ian right extremists, gun nuts
and believers in "New World Or-
der" conspiracies. Mr. Buchanan,
riding a crest of angry economic
populism and dogmatic moral
outrage, just proves the point.
But as long as Jews continue
to shun the GOP, Jewish Re-
publicans counter, the Jewish
community will lack influence
over half of the American demo-
cratic spectrum.
Lopsided Jewish support for
the Democrats, though based on
genuine concerns, leaves Jews
