Arafat Predicts Israel's Demise
The PLO leader was in Stockholm, Sweden Jan. 30, 1996
to celebrate a peace prize shared by Peace Now, Labor
Young Leadership and Fatah youth. He assured a closed
meeting of Arab ambassadors that the establishment of a
Palestinian state was imminent. He declared that Shimon
Peres and Yossi Beilin would support such a state.

• He predicted Jews would not live under Palestinian sovereignty. "They will give up
their dwelling and leave for the U.S. We Palestinians will take over everything
including all of Jerusalem."

• He expects civil war to erupt in Israel. Outlining his strategy he stated, "The PLO
will concentrate on splitting Israel psychologically into two camps. Within five years
we will have 6-7 million Arabs living in the West Bank and Jerusalem. We plan to
eliminate the State of Israel in our battle for a united Palestine under Arab rule.

This is the man who is Israel's "peace" partner. This is the man that Israel is
asking to protect their people against terrorism!

• Please ask your Congressmen and Senators to join the Peace Accord Monitoring
Group of the Congress and to stop sending your tax dollars directly to Mr. Arafat.

Hillary Clinton receives the NCJW Faith and Humanity Award.

tice of giving the same rehearsed
responses, Mrs. Clinton's an-
swers were fresh and appeared
to be from -the heart.
Between sips of tea (she's a
health nut, according to one of
her travel aides), Mrs. Clinton
spoke about what happens when
she does not agree with her hus-
band's views on an issue or pol-
icy.
"He is the president and he is
the one who has to make the fi-
nal decision," Mrs. Clinton said.
"He is always seeking out peo-
ple's advice and opinions. He is
constantly synthesizing infor-
mation to be able to make what
he thinks is the best decision. So
I'm one of many people who
might offer an opinion. But
whether or not he agrees with all
of the advice he gets — that
would be impossible.
"We talk about a lot of things,
but not by any means most of
what he has to deal with every

single day. I have no idea lots of
times why he concludes the way
he does on certain issues, but he
does it after a lot of real careful
thought."
Hillary Clinton maintains that
because of a tradition of com-
passion and charity in the Jew-
ish community, Jewish leaders
are well-positioned to advocate
on behalf of those in need and
what, she says, is a necessary
partnership between the public
and private sector.
"It's just a myth to think that
all of the needs that the govern-
ment now meets can be taken
care of by the private sector," she
said.
The interview was politely in-
terrupted by a White House staff
member. Mrs. Clinton was on a
tight schedule and was off to a
lunch with David and Doreen
Hermelin, who last week hosted
the president at a $50,000-per-
person private reception. 111

Raymond Tanter: "It won't be an issue
unless Israel takes controversial
actions."

the Palestinian Authority must
turn over suspected terrorists to
Israeli authorities.
Pat Buchanan says he favors
a strong, independent state of Is-
rael and that the United States
has a moral commitment to guar-

antee Israel's survival and secu-
rity.
Although there have been de-
cisive issues between Sen. Dole
and Mr. Buchanan, Dr. Tanter
said, the Middle East has not
been a topic of discussion.
Dr. Tanter points to several ex-
amples when Israel was a hot-
button issue in a presidential
campaign.
• In the 1956 election cam-
paign, Dwight D. Eisenhower
threatened to make Jews pay
taxes on contributions to Israel
because Israel took part in the
Sinai campaign against Egypt.
• During Jimmy Carter's 1980
campaign, the then-president
said Jewish settlements on the
West Bank were illegal and an
obstacle to peace. Ronald Reagan
said Jewish settlements on the
West Bank were not illegal.
• In 1992, George Bush said
Israeli settlement activity had to
stop or the nation would not be
entitled to loan guarantees. Bill
Clinton disagreed. ❑
