How do we help Jews feel less
like defendants for "not enough
Jewishness"? My longtimne
friend and future rabbinic col-
league Michael Mellen taught me
that we Jews today need to learn
how the ancient tabernacle was
infused with meaning in each and
every brick and space.
Michael teaches that the He-
brew word for the altar in the
tabernacle, mizbeach, is an
acronym with each letter stand-
ing for different relationships of
Jews who were a part of the com-
munity. Mem stood for mekhilta
- forgiveness; zayin for zichut -
merit; bet for bracha - blessing;
chet for chayim -life. Each letter
a step toward relationship with
the tabernacle.
This week I suggest we look
closely at our connection to the
tabernacles of Jewish life today
and examine the individual
meanings we Jews associate with
our synagogues and institutions.
How infused with meaning are
the symbols of our Jewish com-
mitment? Do forgiveness, merit,
blessing and life pervade our in-
stitutions?
Finally, how do we connect
modern Jews to the volume of
their prayers inside their home,
around dining room tables, after
hearing the news on television? In
these moments, the true volume
of our Jewish convictions and com-
mitments becomes evident. ❑
