More On Menken And King David ) Menken and Tim A lan Rice have completed the first draft of the King avid musical to cele- brate the 3,000th anniversary of the city of Jerusalem, which King David proclaimed as Israel's cap-': ital. The musical, soon to undergo a series of rewrites, enters pre- production in May, looking to- ward its September debut as a full-scale arena concert. The set- ting will be the 6,000-seat Sul- tan's Pool arena situated just outside Jerusalem's Old City. Additional performances will be scheduled throughout Israel and in approximately 20 cities worldwide. It then will be restaged as a theatrical produc- tion for Broadway. "It's very much a story of a man and a nation," Menken disclosed. "It's not done in any way as a whitewash or homage to the greatness of King David. He cer- tainly was a man of greatness as well as many flaws. It really is the story of the passing of power. The religious aspect is not in the fore- front at all." Rice, who is not Jewish, is the storyteller, while Menken brings Semitic influence to the music. "I was in Israel once with the project, and it was fascinating and thrilling," Menken said. "I got to be a tourist only in that con- text. There were video crews trail- ing us so it was hardly a normal tourist's experience. "We did see a lot of interesting sights and had a lot of interest- ing meetings. It was a practical, work-oriented trip and extreme- ly memorable." ❑ Suzanne Chessler ‘ EXTENDED!
