UNIQUE AMONG MICHIGAN'S expenses is rentals," says Carol Lewis, an event planner in Troy. On the other hand, some of the most beautiful touches a party can boast come from businesses that rent. From its 3,600-square-foot Bloomfield Hills warehouse, Par- ty Linens supplies everything from in-home birthday parties to cor- porate galas with any type of table decoration related to fabric, says co-owner Suzanne Bluestein. That includes napkins, table skirting, toppers and chair covers in bright contemporary prints, pastel florals, sheers, polished cottons, taffetas and lace. "People are discovering that (the right linen) adds a mood and theme to their party," Ms. Bluestein says. Down the street at Bloomfield Rentals, owner Sara Reizen can outfit any gala with table service, tables and chairs, tents that hold up to 180 people, silver trays, even an antique bird cage. Her wood-padded chairs are shipped in their own covers to avoid scratching and, if necessary, felt pads are added to protect a host's wood floors. The Display Group in Detroit takes rentals a step further. The company stocks 12,000 square feet of props, backdrops and equip- ment, including giant castles, tiki bars, a Uniroyal tire, guillotines, saddles and celebrity cutouts. It will deliver, pickup and even co- ordinate with an event planner, caterer or florist. Some party professionals insist that it's the entertainment that makes or breaks an event "They don't remember the food five years later," says disk jockey Steve Jas- gur, who worked at Deborah Luria's party. "They remember whether they had a good time or not."
